Recently, I have had several conversations with teachers regarding planning within Marzano’s Framework. When planning to incorporate different elements from the framework, sometimes we get caught up incorporating these strategies just because they are on the map and that is what we are supposed to do.  Rather than selecting strategies for deliberate purposes.

For example, we may plan for a preview activity because element 8 says we should preview new content.  We may do a KWL and have students jot down what they know about a topic and then jump right into the lesson. There is nothing inherently wrong with this as long as we reached our desired effect for Previewing:  “Students make a link from what they know to what is about to be learned: activating prior knowledge.”  If during the KWL, students did not make any links from their prior knowledge to the content than our desired effect was not reached.

When planning, I think it would be helpful for us to spend some time thinking about the desired effects of whatever strategies we are using, Doing so will help us monitor and adjust as needed.
